Visakhapatnam:
MLC and YSRCP Women’s Wing President Varudu Kalyani criticized the alliance government for its failure to ensure women’s safety. Speaking at a press meet in Visakhapatnam, she expressed concern over the recent incidents of sexual assaults on minor girls in Bheemunipatnam constituency, which is in the home district of the Home Minister.
Alcohol and Drug Abuse to Blame
She stated that the widespread sale of liquor, over 50,000 belt shops, and the easy availability of drugs like ganja and cocaine are contributing to increasing crimes against women. “Eighty percent of these attacks are committed under the influence of alcohol,” Kalyani noted, demanding the immediate closure of all belt shops.
No Support for Victims
Kalyani pointed out that there has been no response from the Home Minister regarding incidents such as the sexual assault of a minor in Etikoppaka or the murder of a young woman in Rambilli village.
Demands for Immediate Action
- Closure of belt shops
- Regulation of alcohol sales
- Strict action to control the drug menace
“It’s high time the government takes measures to protect women. If not, women themselves will rise in protest,” Kalyani warned.
