NEW DELHI — YSRCP Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy has raised serious concerns about the conditions faced by Indian migrant workers in Kuwait, especially those from the Rayalaseema region. The MP pointed out issues such as employers taking workers’ passports, low wages, poor living conditions, changes to job roles, and even incidents of violence.
“Indian migrant workers, particularly those from the Rayalaseema region, are facing severe challenges in Kuwait,” said MP Gurumoorthy.
YSRCP MP’s Efforts to Help Migrant Workers
To address these issues, MP Gurumoorthy has been actively working with both the Indian and Kuwaiti governments. He has written to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Ambassador of Kuwait to India, urging them to take action to protect the rights of Indian workers. He also submitted a formal request to the Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, calling for immediate attention to the situation.
Meeting with Kuwaiti Authorities
In an important move, MP Gurumoorthy met with Mishal Mustafa Al-Shamali, the Ambassador of Kuwait to India, to discuss these critical issues. The Ambassador assured the MP that he would raise the concerns with the Kuwaiti government and make sure action is taken.
Proposal for a Direct Flight to Tirupati
Recognizing the large number of workers from Tirupati and nearby areas in Kuwait, MP Gurumoorthy has pushed for the creation of a direct flight route between Kuwait and Tirupati. This flight would make it easier for migrant workers to travel home.
The Kuwaiti authorities have responded positively to this idea, saying two airlines currently operate from Kuwait and they would seriously consider the request. They also mentioned that the Kuwaiti government would talk to India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu, about this proposal.
Request for Direct Flights to be Fast-Tracked
To move the process forward, MP Gurumoorthy has formally requested Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to approve direct flights between Kuwait and Tirupati. He believes that this step would greatly benefit migrant workers and improve travel options between the two regions.
Commitment to Workers’ Welfare
MP Gurumoorthy emphasized that all these efforts are being led by YSRCP leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, with MP Meda Raghunandan Reddy also supporting the cause. He assured his commitment to ensuring the welfare of Indian migrant workers and improving travel options for people from Tirupati and surrounding areas.
Recent Tragedy Highlights Worker Vulnerability
The issue of Indian workers in Kuwait has gained more attention after a fire in a labor camp in Kuwait killed 46 Indian workers. The YSRCP’s actions shed light on the difficult conditions many Indian workers face in the Gulf. Indian workers, including carpenters, masons, electricians, and factory workers, make up about a fifth of Kuwait’s workforce. Indians are the largest migrant group in Kuwait, with an estimated population of over 9 lakh.
