The Donald Trump administration canceled a $21 million fund that was set to support voter participation efforts in India. The decision was made by the Department of Global Engagement (DOGE), with Trump justifying the move by stating that India has enough money and does not require financial assistance from the US.
Trump, while addressing the issue, remarked that he has great respect for India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but questioned the necessity of providing such a large sum.
“Why should we give them $21 million? India has plenty of money,” he reportedly stated.
The cancellation of this funding has sparked discussions about US-India relations, with some seeing it as a pragmatic financial decision, while others view it as a policy shift impacting international cooperation on democratic initiatives.
