Andhra Farmers Protest as Sugarcane Rots Near Factories—CBN’s Broken Promise?

Thousands of sugarcane farmers in the Anakapalli district are facing massive losses as their produce rots near the Govada Sugar Factory due to government inaction. Despite repeated pleas for immediate processing, the factory remains largely non-operational, plagued by frequent shutdowns and poor maintenance.

Unfulfilled Promises

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu (CBN) had promised to revive four defunct sugar factories in the region. However, nearly a year into his tenure, only Govada Sugar Factory is partially operational, while the others remain shut. Even Govada struggles with mismanagement, causing further distress to farmers.

Farmers Left in Crisis

During the 2024 elections, CBN pledged:

  • Higher Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sugarcane
  • Revival of four sugar mills in Anakapalli
  • Timely procurement and processing of crops

Yet, farmers are now left without fair MSP rates and struggle to get their harvest processed. With no storage facilities and prolonged factory closures, their yield is drying up on the roads.

Rising Protests

Angered by unfulfilled promises, farmers have launched large-scale protests, accusing the government of neglect. “We voted for change, but the situation remains became worse,” said one protesting farmer. “If our sugarcane isn’t processed, how can we expect fair prices?”

Is Kutami Failing Farmers?

The Telugu Desam Party-led coalition (Kutami) won power on promises of farmer welfare and economic revival. Yet, the ongoing crisis in Anakapalli paints a different picture. Critics argue CBN’s policies continue to favor big businesses over agriculture, leaving farmers stranded once again.

With no clear response from the government, protests are set to intensify. Will the Kutami government act, or will Andhra’s sugarcane farmers face another betrayal?
