Vizianagaram: If women are not safe even within the police force, what can be said about the safety of ordinary women? A horrific attack on a female Sub-Inspector in Gudivada, Vizianagaram district, has once again highlighted this alarming issue.
In this shocking incident in Gudivada village, Veppada Mandal, a female SI named Devi attempted to stop a group of young men from behaving in an obscene manner during a local festival. Enraged by her intervention, the miscreants brutally assaulted her, pulling her hair and verbally abusing her. Fearing for her life, she had to flee and take shelter in a nearby house.
Although nine accused individuals have been arrested so far, the government must take special measures to ensure the safety of female police officers. If women who are entrusted with maintaining law and order face such attacks, how can ordinary women feel secure?
The government must at least wake up after this horrifying incident and implement strict measures to protect female police officers. Civil society must also take responsibility by ensuring women’s safety and upholding the law with utmost seriousness.
