The awake craniotomy method was employed for a 65-year-old woman at GMR Varalakshmi Care Hospital to address internal bleeding in her skull. Given her asthma condition, the medical team opted for this approach to minimize risks associated with general anesthesia.
During the surgery, the patient, K. Satyavathi, was kept awake and comfortable with local anesthesia administered up to her neck. To keep her spirits high, the doctors played her favorite songs by the legendary SP Balasubrahmanyam.
Dr. Vinod and his team decided that surgery was necessary after Satyavathi experienced partial paralysis in her legs and hands due to the internal bleeding. They explained the procedure to her family, who approved the awake craniotomy method for better outcomes.
Dr. D. Rajendra noted that their experienced team is equipped to handle complex cases while supporting families throughout the process. Satyavathi has made a good recovery and is expected to be discharged soon.
