From Criticism to Continuation: Andhra Pradesh Government’s U-turn on SECI Agreement Exposes Political Hypocrisy

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government, which once fiercely criticized the SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India) deal, has now decided to move forward with the same agreement. This shift reveals political double standards and hypocrisy within the ruling party.

The Controversy:

In December 2021, the AP DISCOMs signed a Power Sale Agreement (PSA) with SECI to supply free electricity to farmers and reduce the government’s subsidy burden. Opposition parties, however, criticized the deal, arguing it would burden the public with rising costs.

Now, the government is continuing with the same agreement, contradicting its previous stance and raising questions among the public about the inconsistency in its policies.

Government’s Change of Position:

Having previously advocated for scrapping the deal, the current administration’s move to continue with it has sparked confusion and concern among the public. If the government were to cancel the deal, it would face compensation costs between Rs. 2,500 crore and Rs. 2,800 crore, intensifying pressure on the state’s finances.

Conclusion:

The SECI deal, once a point of intense criticism, is now a source of political controversy. The government’s reversal on its earlier position is creating a significant debate, leaving the public and political analysts questioning the motives behind this sudden shift.
