Kandukur MLA Entangled in Corruption Scandal Over Ramayapatnam Port Development

The TDP-led government in Andhra Pradesh is facing serious allegations as Kandukur MLA  stands accused of extorting money from contractors working on the ₹4,361 crore Ramayapatnam Port project. Contractors claim that illegal fees are being levied on every truck carrying construction materials, disrupting progress and raising concerns among investors.

How the Alleged Extortion Works

Insiders from the construction site report the enforcement of a “commission system,” where:

  • A fee of ₹2,000 per lorry is allegedly charged for entry.
  • Failure to pay results in deliberate obstructions, delaying construction.
  • MLA’s close aides are reportedly collecting money at checkpoints, forcing contractors to comply.

A senior official involved in the project has warned that these unauthorized payments are slowing down crucial infrastructure development for Phase 1 of the port.

Political Backlash and Reactions

The opposition YSRCP has fiercely criticized Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, questioning whether this reflects his “pro-business governance model.”

Former minister Botcha Satyanarayana (YSRCP) remarked: TDP promised transparent governance, yet their own MLAs are extorting investors. Is this their vision for Andhra Pradesh’s development?

Economic analysts caution that such corruption tarnishes Andhra Pradesh’s reputation as an investment-friendly destination, discouraging both domestic and international investors.

Strategic Importance of Ramayapatnam Port

As part of Andhra Pradesh’s “Three Greenfield Ports Initiative,” the Ramayapatnam Port is expected to:

  • Boost trade and generate employment for over 25,000 people.
  • Handle 138 million tons of cargo annually upon completion.
  • Support industries in Prakasam, Nellore, and Kadapa districts.

However, persistent corruption allegations threaten to derail these benefits and weaken investor confidence.

Investor Confidence at Risk

Industry experts warn that continued scandals could drive potential investors toward states like Gujarat or Tamil Nadu, which are perceived as having more stable and transparent industrial policies.

With the TDP government’s credibility at stake, all eyes are on whether Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will take decisive action against corruption within his party or allow it to persist under his leadership.
