Visakhapatnam: In a controversial move, the Andhra Pradesh government is considering a proposal to permit the sale and consumption of beer and wine at beach shacks along the state’s coastline. The announcement, made by Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh at Rushikonda Beach in Visakhapatnam on Monday, has sparked concerns about the potential social and environmental impact of such a policy.
The proposal has been brought to the attention of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and a decision is expected soon. According to Minister Durgesh, the initiative aims to attract more foreign tourists by allowing them to enjoy alcoholic beverages at designated beach shacks, similar to the permits currently granted to five-star hotels. However, critics argue that prioritizing alcohol sales over sustainable tourism efforts could set a dangerous precedent.
“The objective is to enhance the tourism experience and increase footfall at our beaches,” the minister said. However, concerns have been raised about the possible rise in public disturbances, littering, and the impact on local communities who rely on these beaches for their livelihoods.
